Angling Development Officer

The Angling Development Board (ADB) is looking to appoint a Development Officer for Equity and Ethics.

The officer will lead on the development Equality Standards in angling in partnership with the Sports Equity Alliance, the development and implementation of Child Protection Policies with the Child Protection in Sport Unit and Anti-Doping Policies and procedures with UK Sport.

Angling has the potential to become one of the most equitable of sports in which men can compete against women, children against adults, able bodied against people with disabilities, and young against old. It can also have a non-competitive structure attracting individuals who want to be active, but are put off by the competitive nature of sport. And yet less than 2% of anglers are female and less than 1% are from black and ethnic minority groups. Its potential is untapped though despite the face that it is the most popular sport amongst people with disabilities and is very popular with people from low income groups.

Building on angling's equity and popularity amongst hard to reach groups this role can help deliver changes in individuals and society that cannot be achieved in any other sport. The post is not only challenging, it also has the potential to be rewarding, helping to bring real changes to a sport whose potential is currently untapped.

Further information about the position of Angling Development Officer can also be downloaded. For a job pack, including a job description and application form contact Angela Woodgate on 0115 9813535, write to Angela Woodgate, The National Federation of Anglers, National Water Sports Centre, Adbolton Lane, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, NG12 2LU or email angela.woodgate@nfadirect.com. The closing date for applications is Monday 9th July.

Golf clubs need to get on par with new discrimination proposals

golf courseThe DCLG has today published a consultation paper looking at the implementation of a Single Equality Bill. Proposals include reforms to mixed private members clubs - such as golf clubs - which will no longer be able to discriminate against women.

Suggested reforms would bring to an end practices which restrict the times their female members have access to club facilities, play during the day and even those which currently bar them from running the club.

Perhaps the biggest news is that the directive only applies to mixed clubs (so it won't affect the Royal and Ancient, for example, which is still a male only club). The government is not opposed to private members clubs of one sex or another. They only stipulate that a mixed club should treat everyone equally. Further info from a parliamentary debate.

The proposed Bill will see the implementation of a European Directive (pdf document) on the principle of equal treatment between women and men in the access to and the supply of goods and services. The Sex Discrimination Act will also be amended to include it. The deadline for implementation is 21 December 2007.

The WSF feels that this is good news, but still only a very small victory. Women are still under-represented at all levels of sport, from the playing field to the boardroom. The first challenge is to address these obvious discriminatory practices which allow sport to remain a male dominated pursuit.

FIFA's Big Count

The following story is taken from theFA.com

The success of FIFA’s extensive investment in the development of football worldwide seems to be leaving its mark with regard to the number of people around the globe who actually play the game according to the latest figures.

With 265 million male and female players and a further five million referees, coaches and other officials, a grand total of 270 million people, or four per cent of the world’s population, are involved in football. These are the impressive findings of the Big Count 2006, a FIFA survey of its member associations (207 at the time), which, having first been conducted in 2000, was repeated last year with the same criteria to provide an interesting insight into the growth of football worldwide.

“Football’s popularity remains undiminished and is actually increasing,” reflected FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.

“If you count the relatives and close friends of active participants in football, who share in their passion for the game as fans and support them in other ways, the total number is even more impressive: well over a billion people worldwide are involved in football.”

Here are some of the most important findings of the Big Count 2006:
