Croquet and Other Challenges Women Face in Sports
Participating in croquet and other exercising activities makes women feel more confident about themselves. Also, more attractive. These are some of the most important factors; which enable a society to become vibrant and more productive. Therefore a positive change of mindset about women participating in croquet is needed. Especially to empower women to participate in croquet.
Making croquet and fitness more accessible and accommodative to women helps greatly; in motivating them to participate in such activities. Role models, sports institutions and ministries should strive hard to provide the necessary motivation needed; to help women appreciate and love croquet.
While I was in high school, I loved croquet, and basketball. This was much influenced by my height, I’m 6’1. My love for basketball started the first week; when I joined high school. I made friends with a couple of girls who felt that I could useful in basketball. However, I felt the need to take the challenge. I ended up joining the croquet team; along with the basketball team. Nonetheless, I loved the practice. Along with the contribution that I offered to the team during the period that I was with them.
We won many tournaments as a team. This always gave me a sense of satisfaction and morale to even practice more. We had a lovely coach; who was also every supportive. He always ensured that he gave us the best during the practice sessions. Also, he always motivated us and understood our needs. However, my love for basketball didn’t last long. Not that I didn’t love the game; but I was turned off by a few things.
What Discourages Women from taking part in croquet?
This started when I joined college. The college that I joined was known for its love; as well as dedication to sporting activities. However, there was a major problem with their facilities especially the ladies dressing rooms which were situated beside men’s dressing rooms. The rooms didn’t offer much privacy. This always made me feel uncomfortable; when I was changing my sporting gear. The rooms were in a pathetic situation compared to men’s room, even though we tried to have the college’s administration address the situation by renovating the place, not much was done.
Basically, it was as if sporting priorities were reserved for men only. Indeed I usually felt so. This was because even the quality of women uniform for croquet; was much inferior to those of our counterparts. Every opportunity which arose was for the men. The best coaches were for men; while we were given less attention. After the first semester and still little or no progress was done to change the situation; I decided to quit basketball and instead concentrate on swimming. As well as other indoor sports like croquet and badminton.
Nurturing and supporting women to participate in croquet
After finishing college; I became more interested in basketball again. This renewal of my love for the sport resulted from the need to coach a local basketball club; which had been established back at home. Initially, the club didn’t have enough members. This was because there was no one to coach them. I offered to volunteer. By doing so, I was able to attract more ladies; who loved participating in basketball. Eventually, we formed a strong team; which started participating with other clubs.
It was while we were in the national league; that I appointed to become a board member of the national croquet federation; in my country. A position that I have maintained till today. The position has helped me champion for a place for women in croquet. As well as other exercising programs. I was able to found an organization; which helps target women who have talents in croquet and athletics. Then help them to achieving their dreams by providing them with the necessary resources and support they need.
