WSF research

WSF research aims to support the development of effective policy and practice in the sports sector that meets the needs of women and girls. We work closely with our equity partners, decision makers and sports deliverers in order to focus issues of strategic importance. An important aspect of our work is to ensure that we have the evidence through which we can inform policymakers and enhance the debate on behalf of all women and girls.

Our core research areas are: barriers to participation, leadership, best practice and sports women in the media.

Overarching aims

  • Inform current sports policy and practice as to the barriers that women face in taking part in activity at all levels and potential solutions
  • Identify future trends, issues and research gaps of relevance to the sporting world
  • Underpin WSF's role and reputation as lead experts on women in sport
  • Collect and publicise best practice through our Whatworksforwomen? website
  • Commission relevant research to fill gaps identified and influence the research commissioned by others

We also work with partners, principally through the newly created National Strategic Partnership for Sports Equity Research to help us achieve these aims.
