Sports Can Be a Role Model for Girls
There is always the need to encourage young kids. Especially girls, to take part in physical education programs as well as sporting activities. The society needs to realize that most girls. Even those who love sports; become less active as soon as they hit 9 years. By the time that they are in their teens; only a handful of them are ever active in sports.
This is a trend which starts quiet early. By the time such ladies start there adulthood stage; they usually have a complete shift of paradigm; which can be reserve. This leaves only a few women who will be active in sports. More importantly, in physical activities.
Most of these women actually do enjoy exercising and physical activities; and also, know their importance. But are usually constrained by the world around them; which may discourage much about what sports or exercises that they take part in. One thing which is quiet evident is the lack of encouragement; which many girls face.
A good example is my case. I loved sports when I was a bit young; and used to participate in various sporting activities. The one thing which had kept me going for long was the encouragement that I received from the coach; who trained me to play tennis. Along with the support that he gave me; since I was 7, to sometime when I hit 13. However, things changed when my family had to move from Minnesota to Cleveland. Everything literally changed. In Cleveland, I tried joining a new tennis team. But the support was horrible.
Constant Support and Motivation Helps Teenage Girls not to Give Up in Sports
Nonetheless, the coach of the local club there didn’t seem to recognize my talent. He didn’t offer any support at all. By then I also was experiencing my adolescence; which made it worse for me. This was because I didn’t feel good at myself when I was practicing. Or when in a competition. When I look back at those times; I believe that the coach was supposed to know about the changes I was undergoing. As well as try to encourage me and see me through all that. However, he didn’t. As much as he tried to show me all the support necessary; he really missed a lot. Eventually, I had to forgo a sport that I really loved.
Maybe something should have been done differently to encourage me and many other young girls who miss the chance to be motivated to take part in sports and physical activities. When girls are in their tender age, they usually are adventurous and more confident and hence they usually try various activities. It is also at this point that their various abilities and talents in sports need to be recognized and necessary measures should be taken to help nurture those abilities. However much changes during the teen years. There is usually a war; which women in their teens undergo and such pressures can force them to give up sports.
Understanding the Challenges That Teenagers Face
There is need for sports professionals and other related institutions to understand this stage and be ready to help women through this stage. They need to be encouraged and made to love sports and exercising on a daily basis – let it be made a habit. One way of motivating them is to make them love sports and make them understand that fitness helps teenagers to mitigate the negative influence and perceptions that they harbor. Sports make them feel good about themselves and their bodies and also help them to boost self esteem which is vital in making them stick to fitness programs, like Weight Watchers for instance.
Emotional support is also very important to girls. When girls are in their teens, they usually start to have attraction of boys and try to build social bonds with them. This at times may have a negative influence in how a girl feels if she is heart-broken or feels unloved. By helping them understand their emotions, their psychologically accept their position in the society and can still be more confident by participating in sports, fitness programs and other outdoor activities.
Most importantly, girls need to be made aware of the benefits of being fit. Parents, teachers, sports professionals and the society as a whole should try as much as they can to spell out the healthy benefits which result from participating in exercises regularly. This will enable the girls have clear goals that they focus on achieving when they participate in these activities.
